Some awesome lines on Gandhian Thought, by Ayodhya Singh Dinkar

Some awesome lines by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar...

Oxygen in Delhi

Recently in some sections of the media a comparison between Delhi and Mumbai’s peak oxygen demand during the second wave covid crisis is shown. In it, it is alleged that despite both having similar numbers of peak active cases (around 95,000), Delhi required almost 3.5 times the peak oxygen requirement of Mumbai. Hence Delhi government’s covid management efforts are given a demeaning thumbs down.

Data, when analysed in a completely mindless way, leads to results which can be laughable and at the same time may reflect the state of sinister prejudice some of our intellectuals can be struggling with.

A section on media alleges that Mumbai managed with 275 metric tonnes (MT) per day of oxygen even when the active Covid cases crossed 92,000. But Delhi demanded 976 MT oxygen per day while it had active case load of 97,977.

Here it has to be noted that peak oxygen demand is not a function of total active cases, but of the peak number of daily covid cases. For a few days if a plethora of new cases come, those patients are to be provided oxygen then and there. If a tsunami of 50,000 new patients comes for three days, then the peak oxygen demand corresponding to those days will increase to that tune. Simple! Now lets look what truth this fact reveals for Delhi and Mumbai.

While Mumbai reached a peak of nearly 11,200 new cases per day during this crisis, Delhi reached a peak of nearly 28,500 cases per day, 2.5 times that of Mumbai. Now you yourself contemplate, if a flood of 2.5 times the patients compared to Mumbai is coming to Delhi hospitals, should they refuse oxygen and kill them just because Delhi’s total active case load is still not that much? Does total active case load has any meaning in saving lives  when for many days Delhi got a gush of patients many times that of Mumbai? Why dont our self proclaimed experts and analysts first sit and think before jumping to write down insane analysis in the media!

During the corona first wave in September 2020, Maharashtra had a peak daily cases of 37,500 and a peak oxygen supply of 850 MT. For a Delhi peak like situation of 28,500 cases, this would have translated to about 650 MT per day. Delhi was getting less than 500 MT for most of its severest crisis days. Would we first kill patients from Delhi with oxygen shortage and then complain also that they consumed so much oxygen, they could have managed it in even less?

On 6th April 2021, oxygen consumption in Maharashtra again touched 777 MT per day due to rising cases. As it takes a minimum of 6 days for the infected to require oxygen, the cases 6-8 days prior to that were in the range of Delhi’s peak (around 30,000). When Maharashtra can use this much oxygen for itself, why cant Delhi for almost the same number of daily cases?

Take the case of Nagpur. Peak per day cases nearly 8000, peak oxygen demand 164 MT per day. Extrapolate for the Delhi numbers, Nagpur would have required 584 MT of oxygen had it had Delhi like peak 28,500 cases per day. Indeed, Delhi was supplied 400-600 MT of oxygen during the havoc days, and it struggled to meet its demand against its supplies. What's the fuss about it, when will we Indians start avoiding that evil feeling of extracting political mileage from everything?

One such article questions Delhi’s oxygen consumption compared to Mumbai but later states that the oxygen consumption in both per capita was almost same, around 0.0045 MT per person, but Delhi using about 10% more oxygen per person compared to Mumbai.

Ok, now we got it! So the Yaksh Prashna of today is why the Delhi patients used 10% more oxygen compared to Mumbai! And yes! It is the complete failure of Delhi Government.

Can Delhi government advise its hospitals to use lesser oxygen per person? A doctor who knows hundreds and thousands are dying daily for want of oxygen will really waste oxygen? And Delhi government’s engineering degree holder Chief Minister should tell these doctors of years and decades of experience to use 10% lesser oxygen as the doctors might not be having brains to know the oxygen situation in the city and the country!

We think the next hisaab kitaab they are going to prepare is how much per capita water a Delhite takes compared to a Mumbaikar and how much he urinates, and blame the government for not issuing guidelines to take 10% lesser water to save the country from excessive urination.

Was there not an Oxygen crisis in Delhi? Did Kejriwal government sold off this oxygen to industrial plants? Did the hospitals not have an acute oxygen shortage, they just hired high paying lawyers, got prepared the papers overnight, and approached the High Court in urgency just for fun? To get into headlines? Was it all a drama by the hospitals? Were the patients who died due to oxygen shortage killed in spite of having ample and excessive supply and storage of oxygen?

So the Delhi Chief Minister was playing a drama in front of the Prime Minister, while there was an excessive supply of oxygen hidden somewhere in government stores? Were videos getting shared in social media of the Delhi patients dying due to not getting a single breath of oxygen were all fake? Were those patients acting to get that extra buck? Were SOS messages on facebook and twitter from Delhites for the last cry for oxygen were all due to Delhi Government selling the oxygen in black market in those days?

Alas, some people in our country have lowered themselves to such a deep and dirty level that they do not feel ashamed of doing devil politics even over dead bodies.

Online Education

The quality of education of a school is reflected in the number of hours its students spend in libraries without being asked to.

The quality of teaching by a teacher is reflected in the number of questions the students ask at the end of the class. You can have doubts only when you your attention is on the subject and that can happen only when the teaching is interesting. For education to succeed, it should be fun to learn.

PEOPLE DO NOT WATCH BORING MOVIES.

STUDENTS DO NOT UNDERSTAND BORING LESSONS.

Offline Education and Books

Only when one is interested in the subject, does it lead to interaction – where in the student wants to know more about the subject, clear their doubts, and looks for more material to get a deeper insight into the subject.

If children today are not reading more and more books outside the school text books, it is because of the impression they have about books – thanks to the boring teaching that focuses on parroting rather than understanding.

Education should motivate students to read books even after the school is over, generate passion about knowledge in general and the subject in particular. But unfortunately, education today makes them run away from books and knowledge.

Online Education and Educational Videos

Due to COVID pandemic, many schools worldwide are shifting to online education. While it is a good move considering the risk of the pandemic spreading further, it is less effective, especially at lower classes, considering the distant nature between teacher and student.

Students today can learn a lot more by watching beautiful youtube videos that teach stuff in ways that are not only easy to comprehend, but also generate a keen interest in one to know more about the subject.

But thanks to online education, students will now get pre-recorded videos from their teachers – I am afraid this will make students run away from educating videos on platforms like youtube as well!

Boring teaching makes students run away from not only from text books – but books in general. Similarly won’t boring educational videos being forced in the name of online education make students run away from otherwise effective online videos as well?

For education to succeed, it should be fun to learn

How to provide effective Online Education?

Online education can be effective only when it is interactive and innovative. Teachers can use more innovative methods like slide shows, animations, videos, audios and other digital assets to make their teaching more effective. This can actually make classes more interesting than offline classes!

Distributing boring pre-recorded videos will be useless, waste of time. The quality of education will hit rock bottom by doing so. There are better youtube videos available that can make one comprehend the topic easily, than watching boring pre-recorded videos.

So how can online education be more effective?

Teachers should make use of additional benefits provided by technology by making good use of slideshows, animations, audio/video assets, etc so that the students find it more interesting and easy to understand.

Teachers should encourage students to ask queries and get answers via WhatsApp chat sessions or similar other means.

Teachers should also conduct regular interactive sessions with students to understand how effective their teaching has been, and how well students are able to comprehend the lessons.

Teachers should focus on imparting education than on completing the syllabus.

Every teacher should always encourage students to ask more questions and more questions. No teacher should ever discourage students from asking questions. And for smaller classes, especially at primary school level – online education means nothing. Unless and until you succeed in making it as interesting as cartoons like Tom and Jerry.

27 October 2008

That day changed my life.

I had bought 1000 Nifties at 4000 after Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and Basant Maheshwari very convincing declared on the TV screens that Nifty after having fallen from 6k to 4k can not go any further.

I bought 1000 Nifties at price 4000.

The share market kept slipping and I kept pouring more and more money to meet the margin requirements.

On 24th October 2008, the Nifty had fallen by 400 massive points (more than 13% in a day!) but had recovered the same day. I was going out of money having borne a 10-12 lakh rupee loss already. This money was against selling the shares in the portfolio which already were beaten down massively. A 35 lakh portfolio had already reduced to a 7-10 lakh portfolio.

On 27th Oct 08, the Nifty which was at 2900 in the previous session was seen at 2250! In just one day.

I now lost my courage.

5-7 lakh further loss in a day was there... The entire portfolio was going to be wiped out.

I sold those Nifties that day.

My portfolio also was reduced to about 2 lakh to meet the margin requirements.

Later that day the it recovered to around 2500 but no money and courage was left with me.

Whatever I got from my father in inheritance till that day, was lost.

One of my friends survived that harakiri and successfully recovered the losses in due course of time.

That day I sold the Nifties which I had been nurturing for long keeping in mind the long term returns.

If that day was not there in my destiny, I would have had around 1 crore+ in that portfolio, which was turned into a 2 lakh one that day.

We may say I lost one crore that day. It changed my life.

I stopped share market tracking and never looked back at that demat account for the next 12 years, till today. It has almost zero money. Had to leave my job and join a coaching to be able to earn more money.. we may say I became a teacher due to that day.. my dive into the social sector got delayed.. still am waiting for that... I became less confident about myself.. had to compromise in a lot of situations in life..

People share their successes but it is really difficult to write about your failures.

In the hindsight I feel that me being an extremely introvert person and especially at that time was the prime factor for me not be not able to show courage and wisdom in those moments.

My upbringing had lot to do in how my personality was shaped, and I lacked courage and clarity of thought to be able to deal with that situation. I lacked talking to people about that and sharing these difficult situations with them. Had I shared this situation with people, I would have dealt with it in a much better way. I lacked people with whom I could have shared my problems.

Courage and wisdom are two very rare qualities in a person. The real test appears in a situation like that emerged on 27th Octobet 2008. I lost money, got my life changed but I need to learn from it. Having an insight what makes a person fail and working for its remedy can create wonders for the person and the society.

The all pervasive mental disease...

This is how much people love and regard someone who thinks about all the communities, and not just about any one particular community.

The mental blinds of both sides, and the media of both sides ... are u listening??? You are a big 90% of them all! You are a mental disease.

Scene a day before Dara Shikoh's death

The crowd assembled upon this disgraceful occasion was immense; and everywhere I observed the people weeping, and lamenting the fate of Dara in the most touching [99] language. I took my station in one of the most conspicuous parts of the city, in the midst of the largest bazar; was mounted on a good horse, and accompanied by two servants and two intimate friends.

From every quarter I heard piercing and distressing shrieks, for the Indian people have a very tender heart; men, women, and children wailing as if some mighty calamity had happened to themselves. Javan Khan rode near the wretched Dara; and the abusive and indignant cries vociferated as the traitor moved along were absolutely deafening. I observed some faqirs ["Fakires"] and several poor people throw stones at the infamous Pathan;..

Social Media

Communalism: Discussion with a friend

Do sides hain... Of the media... and the social media.. they don't show the real truth... Due to them only india is in this condition now.

The present saffron communalism is in response to the green communalism of 2-3 decades... The Hindu bhakt lobby is voting en masse in reaction to the green communalism of last 2-3 decades.

Jaise aap pareshaan dikhte ho, aise hee green communalism se last 2-3 decades mein hindu intellectuals pareshaan dekhe maine.

But green side wale intellectuals ko doosri side ki batein nahi pata aur pata bhi hai  toh woh un par nahi bolte... One sidedness is communalism.... And saffron side wale intellectuals ko doosri side ki baatein nhi pata aur pata bhi hain toh woh un par nahi bolte.

So they are also communal.

Aur maze ki baat hai ki yeh dono side ke intellectuals jo utter communal hain, apne aap ko secular aur secularism ke liye ladne wala bolte hain. There will be never a word by these communals on the wrongs of their sides or the rights of other side. They will only talk and write about the wrongs of other side and rights of own side.

Idea of india ko khatra dono sides ke jaahil communals se nhi hai... Dono sides ke self-declared secular intellectuals se hai jo khud bhi nahi jaante ki woh kitna communal hain.

You closely observer people, media, politicians..  everyone around you...

You will find very very few people (hardly none) talking and writing about these all four: 1. rights of one side, 2. wrongs of second side, 3. wrongs of first side, and 4. rights of the second side.

All the people sans the above are part of the problem. And that's a huge 99%, I guess!!

Gandhi, on (idiot) Indian press of 1920s:

“Dr. Ansari writes to say that those [north Indian] papers regard it as their duty to make allegations against each other,

to spread false rumours,

to calumniate each other’s religion

and thereby to vilify each other. It seems this has become a means of increasing the circulation of their papers. How to stop this infection from spreading has become a big problem.”

-Navjivan, Gandhi"s Newspapers, April 1924

How much of this is still true of our (idiot) right and left media, blinded by geeen and saffron color blindedness? Of our Whatsapp and Facebook, champions of spreading the fake news!

There are no right/ wrong decisions, what you do after taking a decision makes it right or wrong

Sharing an email by one of the batchmates at IITK.
___________________
I spent good time reflecting about what should I write in this email. Thought it might be useful for others too – so sharing it.

Dear Mettlites,

Today is one of the toughest days in my life. It is my last day to be with you all at Mettl. You all have been incredibly important for me in helping me realise my dream of being an entrepreneur and in making me a better person. This is my last opportunity to express how grateful I am to have shared this amazing journey with you all. Words are not enough to convey the deep sense of gratitude I feel.

Last 9 eventful years here have exposed me to numerous situations at work. These moments required me to take calls/ decisions often based on gut. Over time, I had the luxury to see the outcome of these decisions in success and failures. To be more efficient and right in my decisions, I have used this unique experience to make my own guiding principles to manoeuvre personal and professional situations. In this last email, I thought I should share some of these principles uncovering some of my life’s dark events known to very few. You may find some of these principles useful as you navigate your life.

1. Failures are opportunities (How I became an entrepreneur):

I was on a high when I graduated from IIMB (a top Indian B-school). I landed with one of the top jobs from campus at BCG* in Brussels. I believed that I was a prized catch for any organisation. I had great friends, my marriage got fixed, my health was in good shape – I couldn’t have asked for more. Then within 4 months of joining, I was asked to leave BCG. I was told that my performance was so bad that they are fast tracking my exit from 18 months to 4 months. I came back to India looking for another job. The job market here was very tough in 2009. Even after months of trying, I couldn’t get even one interview call. My friends started avoiding me. My planned marriage got annulled. I broke my ankle that took ~12 months to recover. Whatever could go wrong did go wrong. I felt that BCG management was unfair to me, friends betrayed me, my fiancee was super selfish etc. etc. I was really depressed, as nothing worked out. I started doing a lot of self reflection. That’s when I realised that I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I was passionate about building something of value from scratch. All this while, the razzmatazz of a trophy job, and other things that I was chasing was not what I wanted in life. They were just attractive distractions. Perhaps when you are at the lowest point in your life and nothing seems to be working, is the time to build thought clarity. My biggest failures brought about the biggest success in my life. I therefore believe that failures present great learning opportunities in front of us.

2. Ships are safe in a harbour but that’s not what ships are made for (Listen to your heart):

Imagine yourself to be 55 years of age, a top celebrated CEO, with amazing 8 figure salary (or more). You are fiddling with your Rolex watch, and brand new Mercedes’ keys. You are waiting for a colleague to send a deck for the board meeting tomorrow. It is 8PM, you are tired, you want to call it a day but you can’t. Suddenly you gaze outside the window, see a nearby park where a bunch of people are playing badminton. They seem to be very engaged and enjoying the game. It reminds you that you were once very fond of playing badminton too. You had a chance of getting into the district team. But you chose to attend competitive exam coaching instead. Although you have done super well for yourself, you will wonder if you have made the right decision. While you are rich and famous but you still eat basic food. While you own a Merc – you couldn’t care less. Your bank balance is sizeable but you can’t pursue your interests. You are wondering if it was all worth it.

For most of my life, I have chased societal goals; set by my family, relatives, friends in what they believed successful people should do. I pursued engineering because it seemed like a safe, promising career; did an MBA; chased trophy jobs, top salaries, name, fame etc. I was afraid of being left behind; fear of failure was very high. And I was completely wrong. This quote gave me the courage of chasing my own dreams instead of living someone else’s ambitions. I questioned  what is the use of my education from IIT and IIM, and all my experience and skills. Is it to chase a value function set by my social system. Or is the best use of my capabilities is to help me realise my own dreams. Through this quote I gathered the courage to do what I wanted to do in life – embark my entrepreneurial journey. As I part, I really hope and wish you all to chase and realise your own dreams. It is a short life and before we know it will fly past.

3. Be fair and genuine with people (manage your personal brand):

Recently, I met one of our first investors at Mettl. We were discussing rationale of early stage investing. In the conversation he said that while he was contemplating investing in Mettl he was approached by another of our common friends for funding in his venture. He said that to him the other friend’s plan seemed better but he chose to invest in Mettl because he trusted me more than the other guy.

I think personal brand matters a lot as we progress in our life. People who we are studying/ working with today could be our future investors, colleagues, recruiters, bosses, guides and coaches – you never know. As time passes by the perceived brand becomes even more important. I get referral check calls for several people who I have worked with even 10+ years back and I am sure you get these calls as well. If we are cutting corners at work, doing a shoddy job, not maintaining relationships properly – remember people are watching you.

4. There are no right/ wrong decisions, what you do after taking a decision makes it right or wrong (being decisive in life):

Life keeps bringing us to critical decision making forks. Often there is not enough data available to understand what decision will lead to what outcome. But the situation still requires us to make a decision and move on into uncertainty.

I have had several such decision forks in my life – Mettl’s business plan, starting new product ideas, shelving others that are not working, hiring for important roles, decision to sell Mettl etc. Early this year, I was again at an important crossroad of my life. Whether to continue at Mettl or to move on. I have reared Mettl like my own child. I have seen it grow from scratch to a 350+ colleagues and growing. I have given it whatever I could and gained so much back – super smart colleagues, close friends, productive work etc. Personally it is the best environment for me to be a part of. But I want to start another startup journey someday. The high seas are calling me again and this time I would like to be more prepared, rested and rejuvenated when I start that journey. It is a tough decision but I believe what I do from now on will determine whether it was the right one or not.

I will miss you all terribly. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tonmoy

PS: Sorry, I am not listing names of people who have done a lot for me. It is a long list and words don’t do justice

* Disclaimer: The purpose of this post is not to try to prove who is right/ wrong and settle score. It is not to settle scores with BCG etc. I think BCG is an iconic company. Some of the brightest and smartest people work there and build stellar careers. I have extreme high regards for BCG.This post is only to share my learnings and the backdrop of all I experienced was important to make the point.

Swami Vivekananda's Gist of the Gita

In order to remove this delusion which had overtaken Arjuna, what did the Bhagavân say? As I always preach that you should not decry a man by calling him a sinner, but that you should draw his attention to the omnipotent power that is in him, in the same way does the Bhagavan speak to Arjuna. नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते — "It doth not befit thee!" "Thou art Atman imperishable, beyond all evil. Having forgotten thy real nature, thou hast, by thinking thyself a sinner, as one afflicted with bodily evils and mental grief, thou hast made thyself so — this doth not befit thee!" — so says the Bhagavan: क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ — Yield not to unmanliness, O son of Pritha. There is in the world neither sin nor misery, neither disease nor grief; if there is anything in the world which can be called sin, it is this — 'fear'; know that any work which brings out the latent power in thee is Punya (virtue); and that which makes thy body and mind weak is, verily, sin. Shake off this weakness, this faintheartedness! क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ। —Thou art a hero, a Vira; this is unbecoming of thee."

If you, my sons, can proclaim this message to the world — क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते — then all this disease, grief, sin, and sorrow will vanish from off the face of the earth in three days. All these ideas of weakness will benowhere. Now it is everywhere — this current of the vibration of fear. Reverse the current: bring in the opposite vibration, and behold the magic transformation! Thou art omnipotent — go, go to the mouth of the cannon, fear not.

Hate not the most abject sinner, fool; not to his exterior. Turn thy gaze inward, where resides the Paramâtman. Proclaim to the whole world with trumpet voice, "There is no sin in thee, there is no misery in thee; thou art the reservoir of omnipotent power. Arise, awake, and manifest the Divinity within!"

If one reads this one Shloka — क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते । क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परंतप॥ — one gets all the merits of reading the entire Gita; for in this one Shloka lies imbedded the whole Message of the Gita.
